A moist and decadent chocolate sheet cake topped with glossy frosting, perfect for gatherings and celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet pan.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Melt the butter, water, and cocoa powder in a saucepan until boiling.
  4. Pour the butter mixture over the flour mixture and stir until combined.
  5. Add the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract and mix until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Make the frosting by boiling the butter, cocoa powder, and milk, then mix in powdered sugar and vanilla.
  9. Pour the warm frosting over the cake and sprinkle with nuts if desired.

Notes

Allow the cake to cool slightly before frosting to prevent melting. Store covered at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
