Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Chocolate chips (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large baking sheet or a jelly roll pan.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Prepare the chocolate mixture: In a saucepan, combine the unsalted butter and water. Bring to a boil and pour over the dry ingredients.
  4. Combine the wet ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Pour into the batter and stir until smooth.
  5. Bake the cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 20-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Make the frosting: In a saucepan, heat the butter and cocoa until melted. Stir in powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  7. Finish the cake: Pour warm frosting over the baked cake and sprinkle with chocolate chips if desired.

Notes
