A rich chocolate cake topped with glossy frosting, perfect for gatherings and celebrations.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet pan.
  2. Combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Heat the unsalted butter and water in a saucepan until boiling, then stir in the cocoa powder and remove from heat.
  4. Mix the cocoa mixture with the dry ingredients, then add the eggs, vanilla extract, and sour cream. Mix until smooth.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Prepare the frosting by melting unsalted butter in a saucepan, stirring in cocoa powder and milk, then mixing with powdered sugar and vanilla.
  8. Frost the warm cake with the frosting and let it cool before serving.

Notes

For a twist, add almond extract or fold in chopped nuts. Store leftovers at room temperature for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
