  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup milk (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup butter (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a sheet pan.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Melt the butter, water, and cocoa together in a saucepan over medium heat.
  4. Pour the warm chocolate mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  5. Beat in the eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  7. Prepare the frosting by melting butter, cocoa, and milk together, then stirring in the powdered sugar and vanilla.
  8. Pour the warm frosting over the cake as soon as it comes out of the oven.
  9. Allow the cake to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a nutty twist, add chopped pecans or walnuts to the batter. You can also swap out half of the cocoa for chocolate chips for an extra indulgent version.
