Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups masa harina
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 to 1 1/4 cups chicken broth (or as needed)
  • Filling of choice (shredded meat, cheese, vegetables, etc.)
  • Corn husks (soaked in water)

Instructions

  1. Mix the masa harina, baking powder, and salt in a bowl until evenly combined.
  2. Beat the vegetable shortening in another bowl until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the masa mixture to the beaten shortening and gradually pour in the chicken broth until a soft dough forms.
  4. Drain and dry the soaked corn husks, ensuring they are pliable.
  5. Spread a spoonful of masa dough on each corn husk, leaving space at the edges.
  6. Spoon your choice of filling onto the masa, being careful not to overfill.
  7. Fold the husk over the filling and secure it by folding the bottom up.
  8. Arrange the tamales upright in a steamer pot and cover with a damp cloth. Steam for about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  9. Remove the tamales and let them cool slightly before serving hot.
