  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate ganache (made from chocolate and heavy cream)
  • Whipped cream for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Mix in the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture.
  4. Incorporate the boiling water; the batter will be thin.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes in the pans.
  6. Layer one cake layer on a serving plate, spread ganache and layer with sliced strawberries.
  7. Build the second layer on top and cover the entire cake with the remaining ganache.
  8. Finish with additional fresh strawberries and optional whipped cream. Chill before serving.

Notes

For best results, ensure eggs and buttermilk are at room temperature. Let the cake chill in the fridge after assembling for improved flavor melding.
