Homemade Sourdough Runzas

Savory pockets filled with seasoned beef, tender cabbage, and gooey melted cheese, encased in a crisp, golden sourdough crust.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sourdough starter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cabbage, shredded
  • 1/2 cup onions, diced
  • 1 cup cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients for the dough in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add ground beef and onions.
  5. Stir in shredded cabbage and cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Flour your work surface and roll out the risen dough until it’s about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Cut the dough into squares, each approximately 4 inches wide.
  9. Place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each square.
  10. Seal the pockets by folding the dough over the filling and pinching edges tightly.
  11. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the filled Runzas.
  12. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  13. Enjoy warm and indulge in your delicious creations!

Notes

Leftover Runzas can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days or frozen for a month. Reheat in the oven for freshness.
