A cozy Greek baked pasta dish layered with a savory meat sauce and topped with a creamy béchamel, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound pasta (like bucatini or penne)
  • 1 pound ground beef or lamb
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups béchamel sauce (milk, butter, flour, nutmeg)
  • 1 cup grated cheese (like Parmesan or Kefalotyri)
  • Olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic; sauté until softened.
  4. Add the ground meat to the skillet and cook until browned, then drain any excess fat.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 20 minutes.
  6. In a baking dish, layer half of the pasta on the bottom.
  7. Spread the meat sauce generously on top of the pasta.
  8. Layer the remaining pasta on top of the meat sauce.
  9. Pour the béchamel sauce over the pasta.
  10. Sprinkle cheese on top.
  11. Bake in the oven for about 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden.
  12. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Can be made ahead and refrigerated before baking.
