Delightful Portuguese custard tarts with a flaky, buttery shell and rich vanilla custard.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 cup of heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 package of puff pastry
  • Butter (for greasing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Roll out the puff pastry and cut into rounds to fit your muffin tin. Grease each muffin cavity generously with butter and gently press the pastry rounds into place.
  3. Heat the milk, cream, and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Whisk together the egg yolks, cornstarch, vanilla extract, and cinnamon in a separate bowl.
  5. Combine the warm milk mixture with the egg mixture gradually, whisking constantly to avoid scrambling the eggs.
  6. Fill the pastry-lined muffin tin with the custard mixture, filling each cup about three-quarters full.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the tops are golden brown.
  8. Cool the pastel de nata in the tin for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar or cinnamon. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days.
