Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups cottage cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Once cooked, drain and set aside, allowing it to cool slightly.
  2. Sauté the beef: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef, chopped onion, and minced garlic. Cook until the meat is nicely browned and the onions are translucent.
  3. Prepare the meat sauce: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Let this mixture simmer on low for about 20 minutes.
  4. Mix the cheeses: In a separate bowl, combine the cottage cheese, shredded mozzarella, and grated Parmesan.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Layer the spaghetti: In a baking dish, layer half of the cooked spaghetti, half of the meat sauce, and half of the cheese mixture. Repeat the layers.
  7. Bake the dish: Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  8. Cool and garnish: Let the dish cool for a few minutes and garnish with fresh basil if desired.

Notes

For added flavor, consider sautéing some chopped bell peppers or mushrooms with the ground beef.
