A creamy, dreamy dessert with layers of graham crackers and fresh bananas, inspired by the famous Magnolia Bakery in New York City.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 cups prepared vanilla pudding
  • Graham crackers (for layering)
  • Sliced bananas (for layering)
  • Whipped cream (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Heat the Dairy Base: In a saucepan, combine milk, heavy cream, sugar, and salt over medium heat until the mixture is hot but not boiling.
  2. Whisk Together Eggs and Cornstarch: In a bowl, whisk together eggs and cornstarch. Slowly add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, whisking constantly to ensure a smooth blend.
  3. Thicken the Pudding: Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook, stirring continuously until thickened. This process usually takes about 5-10 minutes.
  4. Add Flavor: Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Layering the Pudding: In a trifle dish or individual serving cups, start layering with pudding, followed by graham crackers and banana slices. Repeat the layers until you run out of ingredients.
  6. Chill Before Serving: Refrigerate the assembled pudding for several hours (or overnight) to allow the flavors to meld and the dessert to set.

Notes

Serve with a dollop of whipped cream and pair with coffee or herbal tea.
