A comforting and hearty homemade split pea soup, perfect for chilly days.

Ingredients

  • 1 meaty ham bone
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 potatoes, diced
  • 8 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the split peas under cold water to remove any debris.
  2. Combine the rinsed split peas, ham bone, diced carrots, onion, potatoes, and broth in a large pot.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Simmer the soup by reducing the heat to a gentle simmer, covering the pot and cooking for 60 to 90 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Shred the ham after removing the bone and stir the meat back into the pot.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste before serving hot.
