A comforting and nourishing homemade chicken broth that elevates any soup or sauce with rich flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken or chicken bones
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 1 onion, quartered
  • 4 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 10 cups water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs (optional, like thyme or parsley)

Instructions

  1. Combine the chicken or chicken bones with 10 cups of water in a large pot and bring to a boil.
  2. Skim off any foam that forms on the surface as the broth begins to boil.
  3. Add the chopped carrots, celery, onion, garlic, bay leaf, and any fresh herbs into the pot.
  4. Lower the heat and let it simmer for about 90 to 120 minutes.
  5. Strain the broth through a fine-mesh sieve to eliminate any solids.
  6. Season the broth with salt and pepper to taste, adjusting as necessary.
  7. Let the broth cool, then store it in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze for later use.

Notes

Experiment with different vegetables and herbs to customize the flavor. A slow cooker can also be used for simmering.
