Delight in the process of making chewy, delicious homemade bagels that rival any bakery, perfect for breakfast or snacks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Toppings (e.g., sesame seeds, poppy seeds, salt)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by dissolving it and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. Combine the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Allow the dough to rise in a greased bowl covered with a cloth for about 1 hour.
  4. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  5. Shape the dough into 8 equal pieces and form each into a bagel.
  6. Boil the bagels in a pot of boiling water with baking soda for about 1 minute on each side.
  7. Prepare the boiled bagels on a baking sheet and brush with egg wash.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

Ensure your yeast is fresh for the best rise and don’t skip the boiling step for that iconic bagel chewiness.
