A rich and indulgent German Chocolate Cake with layers of chocolate, sweetened coconut, and crunchy pecans.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans to ensure easy release once baked.
  2. Combine boiling water and cocoa powder in a bowl; mix until smooth and let it cool slightly.
  3. Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
  4. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Combine the flour mixture and cocoa mixture alternately into the creamed mixture, starting and ending with flour.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  9. Prepare the frosting by combining sweetened condensed milk, shredded coconut, and chopped pecans in a saucepan over medium heat until thickened.
  10. Assemble the cake with frosting between the layers and on top, generously covering it with the coconut and pecan mixture.
