Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup evaporated milk (for frosting)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for frosting)
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 4 large egg yolks (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans, ensuring they are well-coated for easy cake release later.
  2. Mix together the cocoa powder, flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Blend the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract in another bowl until fully combined.
  4. Combine the wet and dry mixtures, mixing until just combined. Stir in the boiling water.
  5. Pour the cake batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  6. Bake in your preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  7. Cool the cakes in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them onto wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Cook the evaporated milk, sugar, butter, egg yolks, and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat until thickened, stirring constantly.
  9. Spread the frosting between the cake layers and on the top and sides of the cake.
  10. Slice and enjoy your German Chocolate Cake!

Notes

For a delightful twist, swap pecans for walnuts or add a hint of orange zest to the frosting.
