A warm and comforting bowl of French Onion Soup, featuring caramelized onions, rich beef broth, and topped with gooey Gruyère cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Baguette slices
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Sautéing the onions: In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions along with the sugar; cook, stirring frequently, until they are caramelized, about 20-30 minutes.
  2. Combining the base: Stir in the beef broth, dry white wine, thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and let it cook for another 20 minutes.
  3. Preheating the broiler: While the soup simmers, preheat your broiler in preparation for the final assembly.
  4. Final assembly: Ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls. Place a slice of baguette on top of each bowl and generously sprinkle with Gruyère cheese.
  5. Broiling to perfection: Broil the assembled bowls until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Ready to serve: Serve the soup hot, and enjoy!
