Enjoy crispy, golden falafel made from scratch, perfect for pitas or salads.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup dried chickpeas (or 1 can of chickpeas)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp coriander
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Soften the Chickpeas: If using dried chickpeas, soak them in water overnight and drain.
  2. Prepare the Falafel Mixture: In a food processor, combine chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Process until finely blended, but not pureed.
  3. Form the Falafel: Scoop out the falafel mixture and form it into small balls or patties.
  4. Heat the Oil: Heat oil in a deep fryer or skillet over medium heat until hot.
  5. Fry to Perfection: Fry the falafel until golden brown on all sides, about 3-5 minutes per batch.
  6. Drain and Serve: Remove falafel and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm with pita bread, salad, or tahini sauce.

Notes

Leftover falafel can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes.
