Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large sweet onion (like Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko)
  • Cooking spray
  • Dipping sauce of your choice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onion by slicing off the top and peeling away the outer skin, keeping the root intact.
  2. Cut the onion into petal-like sections, making about 12-16 cuts without cutting through the bottom.
  3. Mix the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl: flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Soak the onion in buttermilk, ensuring each petal is soaked.
  5. Coat the soaked onion thoroughly in the flour mixture and allow it to rest.
  6. Double dip the onion in buttermilk again, then roll it in breadcrumbs for extra crispiness.
  7. Air fry the onion at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes until golden brown, turning halfway through.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
