Classic Bolognese Sauce

A rich and hearty Bolognese sauce that simmers to perfection, perfect for pasta or lasagna.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 100 grams pancetta, diced
  • 1 can (400 grams) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil for garnish
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion, garlic, carrot, and celery. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef and pancetta. Cook until browned, about 8 minutes.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste.
  5. Pour in the red wine and beef stock.
  6. Season with salt and pepper, then reduce heat to low and let simmer for at least 1 hour.
  7. Serve hot over pasta, garnished with fresh basil and grated Parmesan cheese.

Notes

Bolognese sauce tastes better the next day as the flavors meld together. Pair with a robust red wine and garlic bread.
