A warm, nostalgic classic apple pie recipe with a flaky crust and spiced apple filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
  • 6 to 8 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Combine flour, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
  3. Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Gradually stir in ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until the mixture forms a ball.
  5. Wrap the dough in plastic and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  6. Roll out half of the dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie plate.
  7. Place the bottom crust into the pie plate, pressing it down gently.
  8. Toss the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in another bowl.
  9. Pour the apple mixture into the crust and dot with 2 tablespoons of butter.
  10. Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the filling, sealing the edges.
  11. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  12. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg.
  13. Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
