A delightful dessert featuring a buttery crust and silky custard, reminiscent of bustling streets in Hong Kong.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/8 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Mix the flour, softened butter, sugar, egg yolk, and salt until crumbly.
  3. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface until about 1/8 inch thick.
  4. Place the dough circles into the molds, gently pushing down to fit snugly.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden.
  6. Whisk together the milk, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  7. Pour the custard mixture into the baked tart shells, filling them about 3/4 full.
  8. Bake for an additional 15-18 minutes, or until the custard is set and slightly puffed.
  9. Remove the tarts from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with strong tea or vanilla ice cream. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
